Leeds Chart Generator Instructions
This tool helps you create a Leeds Chart from your Ancestry DNA match data to visualize shared ancestors.
Part 1: Initial DNA Match Data (The List)
Go to your Ancestry DNA Matches page.
Find your highest matches (typically in the 90-400 cM range).
Copy the data: Highlight and copy the name, cM amount, and relationship for a group of your closest matches. You can scroll down and copy a large block of text.
Paste: Paste the copied text into the large grey box in the "Leeds Chart" tab.
The chart will populate with Match Name and cM value.
A modal will appear asking if you want to add more data. Choose 'Yes' to add more matches to the main list, or 'No' to proceed to shared matches (grouping).
Part 2: Shared Matches (The Grouping)
Once you select 'No' (or if you already have matches in the chart), the status message will update to guide you.
Go to the first high-cM match in your chart (it will be highlighted yellow). This match is the person you will be creating a group for.
View Shared Matches: Click on that match's name in Ancestry to view their shared matches list.
Copy Shared Matches: Copy the list of Shared Matches for that person. You can copy the 'PRO' shared matches page or the regular shared matches page text.
Paste: Paste the shared match data into the grey box. The chart will add a new column (Group 1) and place a colored dot next to every name that is a shared match with the person you selected.
A modal will appear asking: "Add more matches to this column?".
Choose 'Yes' if you have more shared match data for *the same group* (e.g., if the Ancestry list was split across multiple pages).
Choose 'No' to create a new column (Group X) for the next person's shared matches.
Choose 'Finished' when you have created all your groups.
Repeat steps 8-12 for the next high-cM match that does not yet have a dot in any group column. This is the core of the Leeds Method.
